With the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) rapidly approaching (10/15/2011 - 12/07/2011), seniors will once again have to go through the process of comparing Medicare Part D plans and choosing the plan that best fits their needs for 2012. This process of comparing plans can be agonizing and stressful for seniors, who will spend countless hours on the phone with the Part D insurance companies and on the internet reviewing plan benefits.
This year, the Annual Enrollment Period dates have changed as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The AEP dates in previous year was from 11/15 through 12/31.

In 2012, the Part D deductible increases to 0 from 0 in 2011. The Initial Coverage Limit increases from ,840 to ,930 in 2012. When you reach total drug costs (what you pay + what the plan pays) of ,930, you've reached the Coverage Gap or donut hole. During the Coverage Gap, you will receive a 50% discount on brand name drugs. For generic medications, you will receive a discount of 14%. The discount for generic drugs was 7% in 2011.
The Out-of-Pocket Threshold will be ,700. In 2011, that amount was ,550. If you spend ,700 out-of-pocket, you will have reached the Catastrophic Stage. During the Catastrophic Stage, the co-pays are .60 for generic drugs and .50 for all other drugs. If generic drugs have a retail price of or more, you will pay 5% of the cost. If brand name drugs have a retail price of 0 or more, you will pay 5% of the cost.
It is very important that you analyze your current plan's benefits for the upcoming year. First thing you need to do is check to see if your prescription drugs will be covered. You must also check the plan premium and drug co-pays.
Your current plan will send you an Annual Notice of Change describing the changes your plan will have for 2012. It is very important to review the changes. Remember, that after December 7, you will not be able to change Part D plans for the upcoming year.
The Medicare marketing season begins on 10/1/2011. This is when all insurance companies offering Part D plans are allowed to begin marketing their plans. Beginning on 10/1 you can go to each plan's website and review benefits or you can call the plans for questions on the plan.
